This is actually quite easy.
First you need a web site to point to… (for this example it is: www.website-already-on-heart.co.uk).
Then you need a domain name to point to it… (for this example it is: www.domain-that-needs-pointing.co.uk).
Instructions are as follows:
- Log into the main Heart Reseller account.
- Click ‘RCC’ to get to the ‘Reseller Control Centre’.
- Click ‘Manage Hosting Accounts’ to see the list of accounts hosted.
- Click the ‘Superuser’ link to the account you are using for hosting.( i.e. website-already-on-heart.co.uk).
- In the right column of the hosting dashboard, is a link to ‘Temp Web Address’, click the ‘Visit Website’ link.
- A new tab/window will open and display the site with the server IP address in the front instead of the ‘www’, i.e. ‘http://123.456.789.01/website-already-on-heart.co.uk/’). Take note of this IP address as this is ‘where’ we need to point the domain name to.
- We’re done with the ‘hosted’ account, so go back to the ‘RCC’ to get to the ‘Reseller Control Centre’.
- On the ‘RCC’ page, look for ‘Domain Reference’ under ‘Manage Domain Names’, click it.
- Create a ‘Domain Reference’ by adding the domain (without the ‘www’) in the box provided, (i.e. ‘domain-that-needs-pointing.co.uk’) and pressing the ‘Add Reference’ button.
- Go back to the ‘RCC’ page, look for ‘Domain Mappings’ under ‘Manage Domain Names’, click it.
- Under ‘Parked Domains’ select the ‘Reference’ you just created (‘domain-that-needs-pointing.co.uk’), and under ‘Map to’ select the hosting account (‘website-already-on-heart.co.uk’), then press the ‘Map Domain’ button.
- Scroll down the page and make sure everything is mapped as you intended it to. If so, then you are done from the Heart Internet side.
- Log into the control panel for the domain name you are pointing. (in this case http://admin.names.co.uk/login.php).
- You’ll probably find the settings you need under ‘DNS Settings’ although it can be tricky to find. You might need to select the domain name first, then ‘DNS Settings’, etc…
- You’re looking for the ‘A’ record. You might have one that is blank and another that is ‘www’. Both need to be set to the IP address you found in the Heart account (i.e. ‘123.456.789.01’).
- In my example, it was originally:
- ‘’.domain – A – 88.222.111.22
- ‘www’.domain – CNAME – fwd3.hosts.co.uk
- I changed it to:
- ‘’.domain – A – 123.456.789.01
- ‘www’.domain – A – 123.456.789.01
- Note that I’ve also change ‘CNAME’ to ‘A’, as ‘A’ needs an IP address, and ‘CNAME’ needs a url.
- When done, press whatever ‘Save’ button you have.
- All done. The DNS will take up to 24 hours to reset.
It’s worth noting that the Heart ‘mapping’ might take a little while to set itself up, but will be done long before the DNS has reset.
